This one is about God's mercy

Good _________ my name is Coy Baker. Today I am going to define two of God's communicable attributes. Millard Erickson 's book Christian Theology has a great definition that says, "Communicable attributes are those qualities of God for which as least a partial counter part can be found in his human creations." This means that we can take part in a portion of an attribute. My thesis statement declares ; God's mercy will never cease to be because it is eternal to God's personal character. I am going to back up my thesis statement with two points. 1. Mercy is an infinite attribute of God. and 2.because God lives in eternity now he has no present, no past and no future.

Mercy is an infinite attribute of God. There are a TON of examples of God's mercy throughout the Bible. Almost four times as many in the Old than in the New. But in both of the testaments God is equally merciful. As a boy attaining the age of 4 my little brother was able to experience some of God’s mercy. He was out playing on the beach with my mother, uncle, and myself. My brother was playing in the surf and was sucked down under the waves and out to sea. God, at that moment, saved my brother through my uncle because my uncle dove out into the waves and brought him back to shore. That is a real example of God’s mercy. If God was not a merciful God then we would all go to hell and my little brother would not be here with us today. But by his mercy we who are believers will all go to heaven and spend eternity with Him. Nothing of this earth will change his mercy from being what it is. The term mercy brings up two points that I would like to discuss.

God has always dealt with mankind in mercy. Genesis 39:21 says, "But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison." In that passage of scripture, God gave mercy to Joseph while he was in an Egyptian prison by giving him favor in the sight of the gate keeper. There are many examples of God's mercy in the Bible, one of which is when Cain killed Able. God punished Cain by casting him out of His sight forever and making him roam the earth till he died. Then Cain cries out saying "This is more than I can bear." Then out of His mercy God put a mark on Cain's forehead so that he would not be murdered while roaming the earth. The greatest example of God's mercy is when he sent His son to die on the cross. That was the most painful way to die and God's own son endured it for the salvation of our souls. Without His mercy, we would not think of Him as the one that He truly is. We would tend to think that he is a God of wrath, vengeance and murder. That is not the kind of character that God possesses. He deals with us in mercy and loving kindness.

It is human misery and sin that calls forth the divine mercy of God. It is important that we comprehend at least a part of God's mercy because without it we would live in misery and sin. A. W. Tozer puts it this way, "We who earned banishment; shall enjoy communion and we who deserve the pains of hell shall know the bliss of heaven." Tozer is saying that we are getting what we do not deserve. Understanding that the mercy of God will get us through the gates of heaven helps us think rightly about Him. God saves through mercy.

Because God lives in eternity He has no present, no past and no future. A. W. Tozer says, God dwells in eternity, but time dwells in God. I would like to back up this statement with two points but first I would like to restate the definition of communicable attributes. It says, "Communicable attributes are those qualities of God for which as least a partial counter part can be found in his human creations."

God was never created. He has no beginning, and no end, He will not die. He has lived all of our yesterdays and tomorrows. For if God was created then there would have to be someone to create him which is not so because he is the creator and there is none has high or higher then He.

We were made for eternity. This is another point that proves that eternity is a communicable attribute of God. God originally made us to live in eternity in the Garden of Eden. But after Adam and Eve sinned their punishment was that they were banished from the eternity of the Garden. They would now die. But because Jesus came and died on the cross we will now live in eternity with Him in heaven. If we did not know that God was eternal then we would have the wrong understanding of Him. We would come to the conclusion that He would also die and therefore He would be no different than ourselves or a pagan god that other religions worship. There are two purposes that God created us for: 1. He made us for His glorification. 2. He made us so that we would live with Him in eternity in heaven. Therefore eternity is a communicable attribute because we are taking part in the eternality of God.

In conclusion I would like to restate my two topics and the most important supporting facts. Mercy is a communicable attribute because God has always dealt with mankind in mercy and It is human misery and sin that calls forth the divine mercy of God. Eternity is a communicable attribute of God because God was never created and because we were made for eternity. My thesis statement declares that: God's mercy will never cease to be because it is eternal to God's personal character.

Thanks

This one is about how two attributes of God paradox each other

Redemptive theology teaches that mercy does not becomes effective toward a man until justice has done its work. - A.W. Tozer

Good _________ my name is Coy Baker and I am going to attempt to describe how to attributes of God paradox each other. Those to attributes are mercy and justice. My thesis statement declares that God’s justice is His mercy, again, God’s justice is His mercy. Before I continue I would like to define a few terms. Mercy is compassion shown toward an offender. Justice is the quality of being just or fair. Paradox is when two things seem to contradict but in reality they do not.

My first point is God is just. A good illustration of God’s justice is this. When the Israelites sent 12 men to go and check out the promise land. Ten of the twelve said that the people that lived there are to big to conquer. But two ,which were Joshua and Caleb, said that with God’s help they could overpower them and take the promise land. And God was angry with the other ten men and out of his judgment he struck them dead. John 5:30 says, “I can of my own self do nothing as I hear I judge and my justice is just for because I seek not my own will but of Him who sent me.” This is Jesus saying that he can judge but not by his power but by the power of God. My second point is God must be just in order for us to live because without his justice we would surely die. Now how can we die by the means of not having God’s justice? This question can be answered with one word SIN. Sin is the act of doing wrong against God and his commandments. So sin is what happens when we do not have God’s justice in our lives. If God was not just and not punishing us for our devilish deeds then we would surely die in God’s great wrath. 1 John 3:18 says, “For Christ also suffered once for sins; the just and the unjust, that he might bring us to God being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.” My first sub point for this point is, God must be just in order to love us or otherwise hate us. A good illustration is that of a child and a parent. God says to punish a child when he or she sins. When the parent disciplines that child that parent is loving that child. If the parent let the child keep on sinning and disobeying then that parent would be hating that child. The Bible says in Prov. 22:15 “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child but the rod of correction will drive it far from him.” The counter part to God’s justice is His mercy.

Mercy may be defined as showing compassion toward an offender. A good illustration of this is when Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Jesus did it out of mercy and love for us so that we would not have to bear the pain. Which we so rightly deserve. My first point is that mercy is both necessary and essential for life. Without God’s mercy we would be dead in our sins. For God is grieved by our sins, but loves us so much that by his mercy we are able to live with Him in eternity in heaven. Eph. 2:8 says for by grace you have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God. Eph 2:4-6 says “But God who is rich in mercy because of his great love with which he loved us. Even when we were dead in sins made us alive together with Christ, and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” My second point: God must be merciful in order to love us for if He was not then He would hate us. If God was not merciful then loving us would be hard because loving someone has part in being merciful. God is both merciful and just. Romans 9:15 says, He will have mercy on whom he will have mercy and compassion on whom he has compassion.” The flip side of this is He will disperse judgment on those who He disperses judgment, and punish those who He punishes. Ruthless beating is not loving but having mercy when needed is loving indeed.

Justice and mercy work together. When a father spares the rod he spoils the child. But when he disciplines the child he is having mercy on him in that he is not letting him become rotten which leads to physical and spiritual death. Same thing happens between us and God. When God punishes us justly for sin, he is having mercy on us and saving us from destruction proving that God’s justice is His mercy. My first point is without justice there is no mercy. If God was not just then we would be spoiled by His mercy and that goes against his nature. His nature is not to let us be spoiled but to give us life in him. An example of this is when a father does not discipline his child when that child disobeys, then that father essentially hates his child by having too much mercy on him therefore without justice there is no mercy. Pro. 13:24 says, “He that spares the rod hates his child but he who loves his son chastens him quickly.” What would it be like if God was not just? A good analogy subject is pizza. Pizza without cheese is not pizza. It is the cheese that helps in making pizza, pizza. Same with God and justice without his justice God is not God. The definition of God is the supernatural being conceived as the perfect and omnipotent and omniscient originator and ruler of the universe. Therefore if God was not just then he would not be sovereign and therefore not God.

In conclusion I would like to restate my main points. They are the mercy is essential for life. Which means that without mercy there is no life. And God must be just. This means that if God was not just then he would be spoiling us not teaching us. Without justice there is no mercy. Which means that without justice mercy is not in the question because you must be just in order to be merciful. Thank you.
